About the Team

John-Andrew Kambanis (Loyola University, Chicago ‘96):
Bobsled veteran and 2-time Greek Olympian John-Andrew Kambanis will lead the team as pilot of the 2-man & 4-man teams. He has been competing for Greece in the sport of bobsleigh for 12 years and was brakeman of the 2-man & 4-man teams in the 1998 Olympics in Nagano, Japan. After the 1998 Olympics, John-Andrew was licensed to pilot a bobsled. He led the team in the 2-man event at the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah. John-Andrew is now qualified to pilot both the 2-man and 4-man teams.

 

Drossos Gazis (Loyola University, Chicago ’04):
Former Track & Field standout, Drossos Gazis, graduated in May, 2004 with a degree in physics from Loyola University of Chicago. He joined the Greek Bobsleigh Team in October of 2004 while concurrently pursuing a second degree in engineering from UIC. This season, Drew has deferred his class work to train & compete with the team. 


Alexander Ghanotakis (Dartmouth ’97):
Greek National Discus Champion, Alexander Ghanotakis joined the Greek National Bobsleigh Team in October of 2004. In 2002, he left his position at Oracle Corp. to pursue his quest to compete for Greece in the Olympic Games. Alex was just inches short of qualifying for the 2004 Olympics in Athens Greece and now welcomes the opportunity to compete on the Greek National Bobsleigh Team. In 2004, Alex was the only athlete to compete on the Greek National Team in both summer and winter events. 

Alexander Thymaras:
CHL hockey pro, Alex Thymaras, has been playing professional hockey the past 2 years. In 2004 he finished first in the Central Hockey League’s fastest skater competition. Last season Alex joined the Greek Bobsleigh team as an alternate. We are happy to have him returning this year as a full time member of the team.
