Message to all who were in support or actively involved in Chicago’s 2016 Bid – THANK YOU.  Without your contribution, efforts and interest, Chicago would not have been a contender to host the 2016 Summer Olympic Games.  Although we did not win, we can only be proud to have finished in the top 4 and to have had the opportunity to showcase our city to the world.

I think one of the most noteworthy memories that I took with me from the Olympics is the contribution of all the volunteers.  The Olympics would never work without the thousands of volunteers.  Having experienced it firsthand, I was really amazed, and inspiried.  This may come as a surprise, but I remember the faces of the volunteers more vividly, than those of the medal winners.  I remember the friendships created more than the outcome.

Chicago’s bid was no different.  The many who gave  through selfless contribution are the real inspiration because those of us who have chased our Olympic dream and have been fortunate enough to have gone “all the way”, know that it takes a community and much more to help make one Olympic dream a reality.  It’s at that point where those of us who finally “get it” realize that while our motives may be selfish, they become much more. We are transformed through the process -realizing that we represent much more than ourselves.  There is no better inspiration than knowing we have the chance to say thanks and share our experience through our determination, dedication and talent.  It’s a real blessing to be part of any Olympics – even when we fall short of our goals, hopes and aspirations.  While Chicago was not awarded 2016, we still won because we as a city put it all on the line for the opportunity to call the Olympics our own.  Regardless of the outcome, the spirit of the Olympics touched our city and it will remain with us.  What makes the Olympics is not those who win medals, but those who – even in the face of defeat, stand tall with honor, dignity and a new found appreciation for the experience and all that the Olympics represents.
Thank you to our bid committee, volunteers and supporters.
